Sam Lyle

Sam feels that the most important aspect of portraiture is to create a connection between the subject and the viewer. her current practice revolves around trying to capture the presence of the subject, and to present suggestions of their essence, personality and humanity to the viewer through the medium of oil paint.

The portraits are based on photographs of women. It is important to her that she represent female subjects fairly, due to the many unfair images of women she sees  in popular culture. Sam considers gender codes, painting styles and the effect of the voyeuristic male gaze in an attempt to portray her subjects as strong, individual and active females. She tries to do this by creating an outward connecting gaze which is calm, intelligent and stable. This can enable an understanding to form with the viewer at a very human level.
